Caring For Your Wig
A quality wig or cranial prosthesis is an investment in your everyday comfort and confidence. The right care routine can help preserve its appearance and extend its useful life.
The most important rule: always follow the manufacturer’s care instructions for your specific system.
Storage
When your wig is not being worn:
- keep it in a clean, dry area
- use a suitable wig stand when appropriate
- avoid crushing or bending the cap
- keep it away from direct heat
- protect it from excessive humidity
- avoid leaving it in a hot vehicle
- store it away from pets and children
Brushing
Before brushing:
- remove tangles gently
- start at the ends
- work upward toward the base
- use an appropriate wig brush or wide-tooth comb
- never pull aggressively
For curly or textured systems, follow the specific manufacturer’s styling instructions rather than brushing the hair as you would straight natural hair.
Washing
Washing frequency depends on how often you wear the system, perspiration, styling products, scalp oils, environmental exposure, and the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Use products specifically designed for your wig or prosthesis. Avoid assuming that regular shampoo or conditioner is appropriate.
Synthetic hair
Synthetic fibers can be damaged by heat. Unless the manufacturer specifically states that the fiber is heat-friendly:
- avoid curling irons
- avoid flat irons
- avoid blow dryers
- avoid direct heat
- avoid open flames and high-heat environments
Heat-friendly synthetic fibers still have temperature limits. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Human hair
Human hair provides more styling flexibility but still requires care. Repeated heat styling, bleaching, coloring, chemical processing, and excessive brushing can reduce the lifespan of the hair.
Use professional styling when making major changes.
Drying
After washing:
- gently remove excess water
- avoid twisting the hair
- avoid aggressive towel rubbing
- allow the system to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions
- do not apply heat unless the construction and hair type are designed for it
Scalp care
If your scalp is exposed:
- keep it clean
- protect it from excessive sun exposure
- avoid products that irritate your skin
- pay attention to persistent redness, pain, itching, or sores
If you develop persistent scalp irritation, discuss it with a qualified healthcare professional.
Adhesive and attachment care
If your system uses adhesive, tape, clips, or another attachment method:
- follow the manufacturer’s instructions
- clean attachment areas appropriately
- do not forcefully remove adhesive
- avoid using products that are not designed for the system
- stop and seek professional guidance if significant irritation occurs
Never assume that an adhesive safe for one person is safe for another.
Exercise and heat
Sweat, friction, heat, and frequent activity can increase wear. If you exercise regularly, ask your specialist about appropriate attachment, cleaning frequency, scalp care, drying, activity-specific wear, and replacement expectations.
Swimming
Not every wig or cranial prosthesis is designed for swimming. Before entering a pool, ocean, or other body of water, confirm that your system and attachment method are appropriate.
Chlorine and salt water can affect both hair and construction. Follow manufacturer-specific instructions.
When to seek professional maintenance
Consider professional maintenance if you notice:
- shedding beyond normal expectations
- tangling
- cap damage
- changes in fit
- lace damage
- thinning density
- adhesive problems
- persistent scalp irritation
- changes in your desired style
Early maintenance may help prevent a small issue from becoming a larger one.
The golden rule
Treat your prosthesis as a specialized hair system rather than ordinary hair. Gentle handling, appropriate products, controlled heat, proper storage, and professional maintenance can all help protect your investment.
